Michael Jackson Dies: A Jupiter-Neptune Life
Pop legend Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest Thursday afternoon, June 25, 2009. His passing closes an epic chapter in American and global culture, one that carried the Motown phenomenon of the 1960s, whereby black American music began its crossover to mass appeal, into the 70s, 80s and beyond.
A figure of mystery and controversy, a man perpetually chasing his lost childhood, Jackson’s’ peculiar and utterly unique life embodied American culture’s desperation to stay relevant, interesting and at the center of attention. An immensely gifted singer, dancer, songwriter and businessman, Jackson’s talent and ambition led him and his family out of poverty and into royalty status, but at the eventual expense of his well-being.
—————————————————
The natal chart
Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29, 1958, probably close to midnight, with a natal horoscope that (regardless of his birth time) includes a three-part conjunction, connecting the North Node and Jupiter in Libra with Neptune in Scorpio, signifying his larger-than-life imagination and mythology, and the ability to express creative ideas on a universal level.
The cross-sign connection being a reflection of the double-edged consequences of Jackson’s unique ability to detach himself from reality, a quality that ironically underlined both his superhuman talent and vision, and the ominous and puzzling accounts of scandal in his adult years.
—————————————————
The death chart, part 1: Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit in Aquarius
Jackson was declared dead at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles at 2:26 p.m., having been found unconscious and not breathing two hours earlier. At the time of his death, there was a close triple conjunction of Chiron, Neptune and Jupiter (all retrograde), mirroring the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in Jackson’s natal chart, making what is called a recurrence transit.

The conjunction transit of Jupiter and Neptune occurs approximately every thirteen years, and having only lived to the age of 50, Jackson only experienced four recurrence transit periods in his life, including the one at the time of his death in 2009. Outlined below is a survey of the other three Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence periods in Jackson’s life, a planetary account of how these transits coincided with major turning points in his life and mythology.
—————————————————
1971: Goin’ Back To Indiana, Jupiter-Neptune conjunct in Sagittarius
Michael Jackson rose to fame with his brothers Jackie, Marlon, Tito and Jermaine, in the Jackson 5, who signed to Motown Records in November 1968, when Michael was only ten years-old, and began their rise to fame over the course of the following three years, scoring number one hits with I Want You Back, Who’s Lovin’ You, ABC, The Love You Save, I’ll Be There and Never Gonna Say Goodbye.
Although already the group’s lead singer and frontman, Michael got his first shot and going solo when he sang a cover of Frank Sinatra’s It Was A Very Good Year without his brothers for an appearance on Diana Ross’ ABC-TV variety special, Diana! on April 18, 1971.
Jupiter and Neptune were conjunct in Sagittarius during the taping of the show in early 1971 and its broadcast that spring, marking the beginning of Jackson’s first recurrence transit period, which would extend throughout what would prove to be one of the most pivotal years of his early career.
—————————————————
Thanks to their own young age, the Jackson 5’s appeal to children was guaranteed, and sure enough the group’s image was manufactured into a Saturday morning cartoon for ABC television. The first episode made its debut at 8:30 a.m. on September 11, 1971, and featured a plot line that perpetuated the Motown-crafted myth that the group had been discovered by Diana Ross (in reality singer Bobby Taylor secured them their Motown break during the summer of 1968), who provided her own voice for the role, even though actors were used for the speaking parts of the five Jackson brothers.
Michael’s Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit, still in effect, reflected the peculiar experience of becoming an cartoon personality, a metaphorical foreshadowing of the surreal and extreme nature of how celebrity would impact his life. His animated character’s schtick was his magical connection with the animal kingdom, particularly his pet mice, named “Ray” and “Charles”. As Jackson’s eccentric zoo of pets became a phenomenon in itself a decade later, he was apparently unconscious of the fact that his real life was becoming more and more like the way it had been portrayed in the cartoon.
————————————————–
Just a week after the cartoon began airing, the Jackson 5 now had their own ABC television special called Goin’ Back To Indiana, part of which documented the group’s homecoming appearance in their hometown of Gary the previous Memorial Day weekend, May 29, 1971. The show included guest appearances from Diana Ross, Bill Cosby and Bill Russell, among others, and signaled a high point in the group’s career.
Jupiter and Neptune together signify transcending boundaries: social, physical or metaphysical, and reflect experiences that appear to transcend reality itself. The symbolism of the Jackson 5 returning to their hometown as conquering heroes of show business was obvious, especially considering the family was now transplanted to a life of luxury in California.
————————————————–
With the Jackson 5 now at the top of their popularity, Michael’s first foray into a solo career was kicked off with a single, Got To Be There, released on October 7, 1971. It went to #4 on the pop charts, a respectable solo debut for the now-thirteen year-old singer, who was still passing for an eleven-year-old. Although the group continued to release albums and tour after leaving Motown records and refining their name to the Jacksons in 1975 (with little brother Randy stepping in for new Motown solo artist Jermaine), for the next decade the hard-working Jackson juggled group projects with solo releases.
Michael’s solo career became more of a focus as he became an adult and outgrew the family/group format. But its initiation at the time of the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit in Sagittarius served to foreshadow the incredible heights it would reach by the time of the following conjunction twelve years later, at the end of 1983 and beginning of 1984.
—————————————————
1983: Thriller, Jupiter-Neptune conjunct in Sagittarius
Michael’s first adult solo album was the innovative dance classic, Off The Wall, co-produced with Quincy Jones and released on August 10, 1979. Despite being a huge success, it only won one Grammy award and didn’t snag Record of the Year. Jackson vowed it wouldn’t happen again.
He teamed up with Jones again for his next album, the mega-smash Thriller, released on November 30, 1982, an album that would transcend all kinds of barriers in the music world. From its pioneering role in launching the first black recording artist to get airplay on MTV, to the extent it developed the look and style of how the still-new medium of music video, the album made Michael the most popular and famous entertainer in the world.
Having already set the bar high with the album’s first two videos, Billie Jean and Beat It, the third one had to somehow take things further. Director John Landis, director of the 1981 horror comedy American Werewolf in London, was brought in to direct a mini-feature, a video that would take the format further than merely serving as a visual backdrop for a three-minute pop song.
Running almost fourteen minutes, the Thriller video employed horror flick cliches (it was filmed during Halloween season 1983), Michael was transformed into a supernatural ghoul disguised as a seemingly hapless high school boyfriend, who torments his date (played by Ola Ray) by using his uncanny ability to get a pack of corpse zombies to execute spectacularly synchronized dance routines.
The video premiered on MTV on December 2, 1983, as the next Jupiter-Neptune conjunction was applying in the late degrees of Sagittarius, beginning the second recurrence transit period of his life.
The fact that the video had its debut just over a year after the album was first released was a reflection of the album’s enduring popularity and still-mounting sales figures. A stunning finale to the pop sensation of 1983, let alone the century, it also marked a peak and turning point, a period that gradually came to haunt Michael for being a standard too high for even him to repeat.
Unlike his major rival of the 1980s, Madonna (less than two weeks his senior), Michael was already a fully-formed creative talent by 1983 (the year she released her debut album) and ironically lacked the freedom her relative inexperience in the music world gave her to develop creatively as her fame grew.
—————————————————
Michael kicked off 1984 by filming a Pepsi commercial with his brothers, a prelude to their regrouping for an album and tour later in the year. But there was still some glory due from Thriller, the Landis video and single having closed the previous year at the top of the charts.
The accolades began with his sweep of the 11th annual American Music Awards on Monday night, January 16th, winning a total of eight awards, including a special merit award.
He arrived at the ceremony with his date, actress Brooke Shields, and was dressed for the occasion in a red Sergeant Pepper-style military jacket and black aviator glasses, an appropriate uniform for what, considering the scope of his popularity, equated to the showbiz variant of a coronation.
The Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit now at its peak at the end of Sagittarius, the page was about to turn just as both planets headed into the following sign, Capricorn, signifying a sea change in the times and zeitgeist, a reminder that even the strongest are subject to the winds of change.
—————————————————
1984: The Pepsi Generation, Jupiter-Neptune conjunct in Capricorn
Real terror struck during the filming of a second Jacksons Pepsi commercial at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on January 27, 1984, when a spark from some lighting effects lit Michael’s hair on fire. Close friend Miko Brando, son of the actor Marlon Brando (also a close friend), was at hand to quickly extinguish the flames, possibly saving the singer’s life.
Somewhat badly burned, television news was on alert as Jackson was hospitalized overnight, footage of him being rushed from the ambulance on a stretcher – head bandaged, faced covered, hand glitter-gloved – played at regular intervals, an image that became as much a part of his legend as any of his staged performances.
The Jupiter-Neptune conjunction had now moved into Capricorn, and the icon’s helpless, veiled figure posed an ominous suggestion as to where his life and career were headed. The accident, an explosion caused for the sake of flashy entertainment that got out of hand, was a metaphor for what Michael’s life was now to become.
—————————————————
Just one month after the accident, Michael had recovered well enough to follow up his memorable experience at the AMAs with an equally big win at that year’s Grammy Awards, taking away a total of eight trophies for the Thriller, including the coveted Record of the Year that had eluded Off The Wall.
He showed up with Brooke Shields again, but this time he also had child actor Emmanuel Lewis, star of the sitcom Webster, along as well. Despite being almost thirteen at the time, Lewis had the appearance of a much younger kid, due to his small size.
Another instance of foreshadowing during the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence, Lewis’ presence at the Grammy awards was the first hint the public had of what would be revealed later, concerning his special relationship with young boys.
While the facts behind this relationship remain one of pop culture’s most hotly debated topics, that the relationship existed in some form is not. Michael’s own childhood had been spent working hard at performing, and as he attained the status he now enjoyed, reaching out to connect with very young males appeared to help him share in an experience that he had been denied.
At the Grammy awards, he was again the big winner of the night, but the event now tends to be remembered as much for the company he kept as it is for his achievment.
That being said, the achievement was nothing to sneeze at. Michael and production partner Quincy Jones won a total of eight Grammy statues for their work on Thriller, a record total that is now shared with Carlos Santana (2000) and Norah Jones (2003), but still has yet to be surpassed.
As it turns out, Quincy Jones was also born with a triple conjunction in his natal horoscope involving a Lunar Node (in his case, South), Neptune and Jupiter, all in Virgo (Michael’s Sun Sign). As both men were therefore experiencing a Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit, the big Grammy win was the cherry that capped the peak of both men’s careers, an acknowledgment and celebration of pop music’s most successful production team.
—————————————————
1996-1997: Family Man, Jupiter-Neptune conjunct in Capricorn-Aquarius
Michael’s life took a dark turn in 1993, when he was accused of molesting a young boy who had stayed at his Neverland estate, a sprawling 2,800 acre fantasy land built on land he bought in 1987.
The ensuing scandal was taxing on Michael, even though the accuser’s family were ultimately paid off and charges dropped in January 1994. The negative publicity sparked a breakdown in November 1993 (more on that in the next chapter), during which he canceled dates on his world tour and checked into rehab to treat his painkiller addiction.
A secret marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis, followed on May 26, 1994, although it wasn’t confirmed publicly until August 1st. The ill-fated union was over by the end of 1995, which which time Michael collapsed during a rehearsal in December (again, more on that below).
As if matters hadn’t taken a strange enough turn already, the divorce from Presley, finalized on August 24, 1996, was promptly followed by a wedding to an already-pregnant Debbie Rowe, receptionist to Michael’s dermatologist, on November 14th.
Their child, a boy named Prince Michael Jackson Jr., was born on February 13, 1997, the first of two children he would have with Rowe before their divorce on October 8, 1999. With the end of the marriage, Michael retained custody of the children, which Rowe signed away in exchange for a settlement.
Now a father in his 40s, Michael’s Peter Pan-like lifestyle and close relationship to other people’s children, especially boys, became even more suspect and subject to criticism than before.
The wedding to Rowe and birth of son Prince occurred during Michael’s third Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit period, now moving through the late degrees of Capricorn, at another major turning point in his life, when once again his role in the world was radically redefined.
Michael’s Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence transit cycles paralleled times in his life when he was truly beginning a new chapter : 1971 – the year his solo career began, 1983-84 – at the peak of his Thriller success, 1996-97 – his marriage to Debbie Rowe and the birth of son Prince.
On March 3, 2009, as Jupiter approached conjunction to Neptune in Aquarius, Michael announced a fifty-concert show that was to held in London beginning in July, but it was not to be. The planets were conjunct and had just gone retrograde when he passed, marking the turning of one last chapter in the Michael Jackson story.
—————————————————
The Death Chart, part two: Saturn transits
One other key transit to Michael’s horoscope at the time of his death was Saturn in Virgo opposite the natal Moon in Pisces, an ominous signal to his peril at the time.
Saturn signifies the passing of time and the grim reaper, the idea that the clock is always ticking and we are all perpetually running out of time. It draws the line between tragedy and comedy in life, and is associated with “adult” concepts like maturity and responsibility. For a man-child like Michael Jackson, Saturn could also be likened to the way children view “grown-ups.”
In his natal chart, Saturn in Sagittarius (quite possibly placed on his Descendant) is square the Moon in Pisces, representing his perspective of always being the child in the room, the little brother to other members of the Jackson 5.
But it also represented his driven work ethic, the hard hours he was willing to put in to reach perfection in all aspects of his work. Michael’s natal Saturn-Moon square implies that his workaholism was fueled by a strong need to please others, and indicates that he was capable of pushing himself harder than was good for him.
In the past, just as in 2009, strong Saturn transits to Michael’s natal chart were in effect at times when physical collapse forced performances to be canceled. The only difference is these previous instances were not fatal.
As mentioned in the previous chapter, amidst the crisis caused by the child molestation charges leveled against him in 1993, Michael’s addiction to prescription medicine led to his canceling tour dates in order to check into rehab on November 12. On this occasion, news that Michael had been abusing prescription medicine seemed like small potatoes, compared to what else was going on.
At that time, transiting Saturn in Aquarius was opposite his natal Mercury (ruling planet of both Virgo, his Sun sign, and Gemini, ostensibly his rising sign), reflecting the anxiety he felt over the damage to his image and reputation.
This Saturn transit reflected the public revelations about Michael’s private life, long kept safe behind closed doors, beginning what would now be a long, gradual fall from grace for the singer. Although his die-hard fans remained loyal, he would never again enjoy the kind of broad acceptance he had until then.
Two years later, on December 6, 1995, as his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley was coming to an end, Michael collapsed during a rehearsal at New York City’s Beacon Theater for a live HBO special that was due to be taped in four days. He was diagnosed with low blood pressure and told to take time off.
Although it was alleged that he might have faked the illness to get out of doing the show, the incident brought to mind the drug troubles of 1993, not to mention how he eventually died in 2009.
At the time of the collapse, transiting Saturn was conjunct his natal Moon in Pisces, signifying the end of his marriage to Lisa Marie and the turmoil in his career at the time.
As with the time of his passing, when it was opposite his Moon, Saturn transits to the most vulnerable points in Michael’s chart were coincidental with some of the lower points in a life of a human being that was otherwise blessed, gifted and willing to share what he had with the world.

hi
Good research on the neptune jupiter node conjunction, however you overlooked the position of Mars. there is also a mars return conjuncting Venus squaring his natal Venus Uranus conjunction, for sudden death due to cardiac arrest I would be looking towards Mars squaring Uranus.
regards
martinastro
Martin, I not so much overlooked the Mars return/square to Venus-Uranus (and could have dragged Chiron in too, seriously), as decided to write about one given aspect in great detail. Wasn’t the article long enough? Adding in the Saturn transits at the end was included as special bonus material, but hey, there is always more to say…
Sorry, Nick, I havent yet read your article and dont know if youve mentioned this, but, as is my wont, I first checked the event davison of his natal and death charts and at 0 and 1 capricorn there is also the jupiter-neptune conjunction with venus involved where t. pluto is residing right now too. This conjunction also sextiling the natal set-up. The same planets are involved in the progressions where 2p jupiter and venus have at their midpoint n. jupiter and the n. jupiter-neptune midpoint. All suggestive of a peaceful end.
Also, the event davison of the natal and death charts has a moon at 2′ 09″ sagittarius squaring n. pluto to the minute. Event davison pluto is at 2′ 07″ scorpio on n. neptune putting event davison moon almost at the exact midpoint of t. pluto and event davison pluto.
Great Work Nick!
Nothing like a Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron conjunction to make a 50 year old think they can dance/sing at 50 concerts.
And yes, the Chiron return would be a novel in itself.
Jill, thanks for the input about the event Davison, I hadn’t checked, though it makes perfect sense, seeing as that chart would have to land somewhere in early 1984, which as the blog points out was one of the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction periods in his life.
Renee, yes, I’ve known for a while that Chiron was a big player in the history of Motown, something I’d like to write about sometime soon. Love the way you just expressed it, though, will have to quote you if it ever comes up again.
Astrologers,as human beings, often leave logic at the door and imbue charts with personal feelings.(eric think hard about why you feel as you do and have someone take a look at your chart) Now look at this another way: Let’s say MJ was a pedophile(I do not think he was-in fact I think that he was bisexual, dated over 18 people, was raped repeatedly as a child-by someone close to him- and would never harm a child-but that’s just me.)
Anyway the reality of the situation is this-he may have been many things but an idiot is not one of those things. As everyone has read pedophilia related incidences are global, kiddie porn is a billion dollar industry, and “business trips” to foreign companies have brought down more than a few pedophiles.
So let’s look at it this way: Say he likes boys-why bring them to his home? he could have had them anywhere in the world, he could have had boys with no command of english, he could have found parents that would have willingly sold him their children for nights of madness. He would have known this. People say his “sickness” overtook him. I don’t think so. Also he toured a great deal-who would have gained from bringing him down like this? Someone he trusted. I think he settled because he know how the “news” lies for the sake of readership ratings-cash basically.
(Anyone remember Bush and Cheney SWEARING Iraq and Saddam were responsible for 9/11-then casually saying they weren’t after they left office?) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/02/cheney-there-was-never-an_n_210145.html

and even earlier

MJ knew someone was out to get him. Check for hidden betrayal in his chart. It drove him mad that he could trust very few, if any, people in his life which led to drug dependence.
Also check his chart right before these accusations began-what was the one thing he was working on endlessly? World peace. He’d met with various leaders in regard to this.
Again I’d say check for the betrayal aspects of this mans chart. Really the essence of what he died of was a broken heart. He may very well be vindicated in the future. Already Jordan Chandler has apparently released a statement that he lied under oath about MJ and the molestation because his father didn’t want them to be poor. (Just put the keywords Michael Jackson Jordan Chandler lied and do your own research)We’ll see how it plays out.

Shiva,
I am guessing that you are referring to the following paragraphs:
“Another instance of foreshadowing during the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction recurrence, Lewis’ presence at the Grammy awards was the first hint the public had of what would be revealed later, concerning his special relationship with young boys.
“While the facts behind this relationship remain one of pop culture’s most hotly debated topics, that the relationship existed in some form is not. Michael’s own childhood had been spent working hard at performing, and as he attained the status he now enjoyed, reaching out to connect with very young males appeared to help him share in an experience that he had been denied.”
I am also guessing that you are interpreting the use of the word “relationship” to be sexual. In actual fact, my use of the word was in the most general sense. “Special relationship” was meant to imply that, as is no secret, Michael enjoyed the company of young boys and formed close friendships with a number of them. Nothing more, nothing less.
I have no idea of the exact nature of these friendships, and was in no way speculating about them. I deal only in facts, and discussed the matter only terms of what is factually known. I have no personal feelings about the story, nor have I conjured any notion of what might have been the truth.
Speaking of facts, my name is “Nick” and not “Eric”, as stated in the byline.
Thanks for your comment.

Nice find, Mo, thanks for sharing!
Nick, great article as always. Maybe it’s your objectivity and sticking with the facts (you could never be a reporter for foxnews) that make for such good reading.
Thanks for saying so, Donnah. I do think of myself as a journalist of sorts. Glad you enjoyed it!
Typically the Hyleg (giver of life) and Anareta (killing planet) play a major role in the death (or at least injury) of a person. Clearly the Moon is his Hyleg; and Saturn ruling his 8th house (death) traveling through the 4th Whole Sign House (the house of endings), and opposing the Hyleg is a serious red flag. When the Hyleg is threatened by a Malefic, there is always danger in terms of health and life. And as pointed out by another commenter, the lesser Malefic, Mars, was found in the “karmic” 12th house at MJ’s death. Woe to the 12th house! Together, the 4th, 8th and 12th houses make up what is known as the “Terminal Houses.”
Mars (woe to its detriment!), Saturn and the Hyleg were very ill-situated, and Mars may be the most important in terms of triggering a unfortunate event. So much for his death. I have not looked at the primary directions, have you? And also Nick, have you found any cycles related to the Moon-Saturn opposition/cycle?
Joseph
Joseph,
Thanks for your input, lots to chew on there. Michael’s natal Mars was slowing down to a retrograde, giving it a little more prominence despite its poor sign placement. However, events in his chronology don’t correspond to points in the Mars synodic cycle, so far as I can see.
As for Saturn opposite Moon, Michael’s previous Saturn opposition transit to his natal Moon occurred in 1979, the year he released his first adult solo album, Off The Wall. I have read some accounts that he damaged his nose during a dancing rehearsal, and had his first of many rhinoplastic operations around that time. Apparently the first job wasn’t done properly, prompting him to seek further surgery, which apparently spiraled out of control. I have looked for more details on this, hopefully I might find some confirmed dates for when he had surgery over the years.
Well done.
Thanks Austin!
Hi Nick,
A friend of a friend was MJ’s Vedic astrologer in LA for several years. MJ told him he was born at 7.30 pm. FWIW.
Cheers,
Chris in Toronto
Hi Chris,
I saw this update posted on another forum, thanks for including it here. Of course, the material in this article remains accurate, since Michael would have a natal Jupiter-Neptune conjunction no matter what time he was born.
Cheers,
Nick in Montreal
Thanks for the article. You make good points about the role of Jupiter-Neptune in his chart. When it occurs at different places in the chart, it can produce radically different events. The current Jup-Nep opposes MJ’s Mercury. So there’s something about that Mercury…
Chris,
Excellent observation, something I noticed while researching but accidentally left out of the article. Mercury, being the ruler of the Sun, and possibly also the Ascendant, is obviously a key planet for him, and the fact that this last recurrence was opposite his natal Mercury is very revealing.
I’m currently working on a “sequel” article on Michael, involving his Uranus transits over the years, and it bears mentioning in this conversation that transiting Uranus was opposite his natal Mercury in 2002, when he was filmed holding his baby out of that window, when he was taken to court for canceling his Millennium concerts, and when he taped the Martin Bashir interview. More on this soon, when I complete and post the article.
Thanks again for pointing this out, I’m glad the article is provoking thought and contemplation.
I’ve made a few observations about his chart on my site, although from a neo-Vedic perspective so I don’t know how useful it would be for you. The Mercury is retrograde and close to a nodal aspect so that’s an important beginning since both are weakening elements.
My write up is here
Hi Nick, Great article. I had seen the radix Jupiter/Neptune conjunction and then overlooked it again, as the planets are not in the same sign!! You make a convincing argument here for scrapping the idea that aspects that are not in the right element, don’t work. On the day of his death – Mercury conjunct the ascendat, was transitting square to Saturn, turning Michael’s t-square, (Saturn oppositie asc. square Moon) into a grand cross. I can’t help but think of the autopsy here, and the idea of being torn apart. Thanks for taking the time to write this…greetings from Europe. E..
Elizabeth,
Thanks for your comment. Indeed, Michael’s Jupiter-Neptune conjunction is out of sign. Mind you, in strictest terms, conjunctions are not like other aspects, as we are talking about two bodies standing next to each other in the sky. In ancient astrology, a conjunction would not be considered to be “an aspect”, in that it isn’t a configuration that juxtaposes two or more bodies in a “dialog” of sorts. In this context, conjunctions are in a class of their own. Certainly, in Michael’s case, the conjunction speaks for itself, in terms of how it continued to show itself in his life over the years.

Nick,
Do you have a stronger preference for the actual birthtime or are you content to stick to the ‘probably close to midnight’, so let’s say between 11.45pm-12.15am.
Carlos,
The question of Michael’s time of birth merits an article of its own, something I hope to get around to within the coming weeks. If you thought this article was long…
My position has always been that, as crucial a detail as time of birth is, there are things that we can learn about an individual’s astrological life even if we only have a precise date to work from.
This is why I generally write about very simple principles like recurrence transits and synodic cycles, because they can be used to break down an entire lifetime very efficiently, and yet are often overlooked in popular astrological discourse.
The crucial detail on this end is having access to a documented and detailed chronology, which isn’t hard to come by with someone as ultra-famous as Michael Jackson. Despite all the misinformation and rumor surrounding him, and regardless of any individual opinion of him, we have a reasonable idea of the timeline of highs and lows in his life.
In my opinion, for learning purposes, this information is even more valuable to an astrologer than a simple time of birth, because more is revealed up front, the craft becomes less about speculating and interpreting, and more about having an eye on the big picture and all the little details at once.
Sorry I haven’t directly answered your question yet, and if you want the short, quick reply, the answer is that I am fairly comfortable with the popular 11:53 p.m. time, which comes to us from Basil Fearrington, but I make it a point to never settle on speculation alone. Like I said, hopefully I’ll have a chance to write about this in a separate article.
For the time being, I will leave you with the following quote. I have with me a copy of Katherine Scruse Jackson’s (Michael’s mother) autobiography, The Jacksons: My Family (St. Martin’s, 1990, p. 19-20), in which she states:
I remember that day well because my water broke while my neighbor Mildred White and I were driving over to see the new grammar school under construction, Garnett Elementary.
“Oh, my God, Mildred, i can’t sit in your car like this!” I exclaimed.
“Girl, don’t worry about it,” Mildred said, turning the car around.
At my request, Mildred drove me home. I called my mother and she and my stepfather drove me to Mercy Hospital.
Shortly after I got there, i began having contractions. Later that night, my son was born.
“I want to name him,” my mother said. I hated her first suggestion: Ronald.
“How about Roy, then?”
“Oh, my gosh, Mama, no.”
She thought for a little while. “I’ve got it – Michael.”
“That’s it,” I said.
That’s a pretty good account, albeit from a woman who had nine children. Later on the same page, she accidentally gives Janet Jackson’s birthday as “August 16, 1966″, even though it is very well documented that it is actually May 16, 1966. Go figure…
Nick,
Thanks for providing a transcript from this book.
I look forward to any further comments you, and others, might have regarding the TOB.
Wow! very interesting…I’d like to know why he did not find a partner /soulmate to get him through this…although his children were his everything, and his family, friends and fans loved him I’d hate to think he died of a broken heart.
I stumbled acoss this site, obviously for good reason…Michael Jackson. We all breathed the same air, sorry to say I am only getting to ‘know’ him, not being into celebrity over the years, and missing some of his music so his story is news to me. I feel like a intruder re his chart, especially at this point of time, and with a very sad story unfolding, but I’m just curious and, How are his children going to cope?. The entertaiment media in the US are unbelieveably unrelenting, capitalizing on the slightest smear, no wonder stars are driven underground, with the added nail of the pharmacueticals. Onto the chart,I too am interested in Michaels’ ascendent, first reading it as Scorpio(12noon), which seemed to fit, then Whoa? Gemini, which seemed a better fit. And now 7:30pm? I love astrology, but know very little, hence the appreciation of the author and contibutors. I see it just as another tool for understanding, and in this instance, yeah, Why was Michael? He has left us with alot to ponder? i am learning much…he sacrificed a lot. I hope he did leave more or less content. His kids are beautiful, so awfully sad for them…i hope they’ll be OK.
Hello again, having read the article again, my confusion to Basil Fearrigntons reference of TOB is the 12 noon/scorpio rising chart…maybe the astrodiesnt site has to rectify this, that is where i first saw the two contadictory refernces?, and thanks to Chris K. for his ‘knowledge’. I must admit, I feel quite strong in MJs’ defence when reading in context and with the addition of the’tools’, like his moon in pisces, the big soft heart, the natural affiliation towards children or childlike inclinations stands out, and I can’t help sobbing. The miscontruing of information or innuendo sticks in my caw. I don’t see him as a “man-child’, just a person who needed an outlet/a form of escape, hence Neverland! His Saturn in Sag.’ displays that mature head on a young boy so evident, but to suggest there was a regression or obsession with childhood is ludicrous. I don’t see him as gay, bi(although we all have that inclination)and where does that ‘rape’ Shiva, come from…I like facts not speculation. As on a previous post, my heart bleeds cause of that special someone missing from his life,
(unashamedly, I would have wrapped my arms around him, as a mother, friend, brother or lover). Our sexuality does define us. To be accused of something so abhorrent, as violating a child must have been unbearable. And for what, money…a lot of navel gazing, I’m sure is happening, especially from the accusers…that is their Karma. In the land of the living, I can’t help feeling for his children, he was a Dad for 12 years,(must have been the most joyous in his life), and what I can gather a good one, doesn’t that say something. A legacy most parents would be proud of…I would like to see Debbie Rowe to be involved so they, Prince Michael and Paris have a fuller connection to know who they are,( What does astrology tell us about her?), and to care for the three siblings in conjunction with Grandma Katherine, and Aunt Janet…What do they want. I homeschool, allowing freedom and natural learning(I am a teacher by profession), there should be a continuem of what they are used to. And the adults putting the needs of the ‘kids’ first!I’d also love to see his children write a book; My Dad, a true account of the real Michael Jackson. I love this man, not so much because of his music, although Earth Song struck a chord, on my first hearing, just after his death, (yes, I have been living under a rock for 40 years),But because of what he endured, and the constant reminder of our treatment of others(tabloid trash, child soldiers, children dying of starvation,,children being exploited, all the ‘isms’, prejudice, inequality and injustice) yeah, culminating in…World Peace. A beautiful soul, our loss and learning, no more suffering for him, here’s to all the beautiful messengers, oh and Happy Birthday Nelson. On a good Note, didn’t Michael achieve a lot, wow, the personalities he rubbed shoulders with, the ability to make a difference how amazing. Thanks to this site…a most cathartic experience.
iiiiiiii llllllllooooooooooooovvvvvvveeeeeeeeee mmmmmmmmmmmiiiiiiiiiicccccchhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeelllllllll jjjjjaaaaaaccccccccckkkkkkkkkkksssssssssooooooooonnnnnnnnn and i miss him so very much…………..
PS. I LOVE your music Michael Jackson, Thankyou for making me dance. It is great, the swell of people speaking out on behalf of Michaels character, and it makes me feel happy hearing the last accounts, that MJ was doing alright, but is it the truth. That is history …now with the interest is focused on his kids, are they to be hounded as well. That show ET, (where do they get their material) splashing private moments across the screen,(particulary of Prince, (ironically it might soften these jackals up a bit)), is quite unbelievable… is there no law governing privacy, or permission. In fairness to his children, and the crap he put up with, it should be gloves off, RIP. Only time will reveal what a truly remarkable person, michael Jackson was, the contribution to our story through his story, will stay around for quite awhile thanks to his children, music, and this phenomenon occurring; what’s happening, what is astrology saying about this…am i like others just star struck or was mj more than the sum of parts…God he was gorgeous… Kindness personified *?*
Nah, I believe Jordy Chandler.
Hello, I’m sure I just read that (is the sons’ name ‘Evan’?) Chandler admitted deception/lying cause they woz poor? Not the kids’ fault…
Evan Chandler is the name of the father, Jordan (Jordy) Chandler is the son. It has been reported by several small websites and blogs that Jordy has come clean about the 1993 charges being lies. For some reason, despite providing ongoing detailed coverage of Michael Jackon’s death (daily updates on the investigation of his doctors, custody arrangements with Debbie Rowe), none of the major news organizations (CNN, BBC, NBC, etc) have mentioned this at all, whether to confirm or deny. I have never made up my mind about any of the charges against MJ, and certainly, a public confession from Jordy or his father would help put a big story to rest. But none of these reports seem journalistic. One writer can’t even get the Evan-Jordy name thing straight. If anyone can find me credible news reports that this confession actually occurred, I’d be interested in seeing it. Reading news is like reading astrology: stick to the facts, and come clean when information is ambiguous or conflicting.
oh hello again, I’m sorry, got mixed up, just checked my ‘facts?’, before reading this, no excuses,(my only justification is mind altering indulgence)and I’ve been catching up with all this stuff (20 years on this new piece of communication), and yeah I did ‘know’ the boys’ name was Jordan,(whoops!) I want the truth too. Please Nick, any verification on TOB.
I don’t want to be a pain in the !, but I just went to the link you posted Nick, regarding the writer,(thought you were referring to me, but I gather I am classed as a blogger) phew, I did read it right, thought it was my mistake, thanks for clearing that up. CIAO
Dona, you’re not being a pain at all. I’ve got a long, detailed article coming up on MJ’s time of birth, but no non-astrological verification as of yet. Stay tuned!
Fabulous, looking forward to it, thanks for the reply too Nick.
[...] My article last June following Michael Jackson’s death is a good example of this approach: In the article (which you should really read before digging into this monster of a series), I illustrated how the recurring conjunction of Jupiter and Neptune every 13 years demarcated very distinct and major turning points in his life, including his very birth and death. Now, naturally one planetary configuration does not a horoscope make, and even without being certain of his birth time there is still plenty more that could be said about his chart using this stripped-down approach. Dear NICK:
thanks for the article on Michael and the Jupiter-Neptune conjunctions. I must say, I kind of agree with the birthchart that gives him a Libra ascendent, since Libra has to do with the skin and he so obviously had a situation with his. Time of birth for this one is 10 00 am.
His relationships are also a real issue and it places his Venus-Uranus conjunction in the 10th house, with his Sun-Pluto conjunction in the 11th.
He always danced in groups, first with his brothers and then with all the dancers in his videos.
It also gives him a Moon in the fifth and he has been the mother and father of his children.
According to the reports of many people around him, he was really having a power struggle situation with his promoters about money, and at the time of his death Mars was transiting the 8th house, and Venus ruler of his 8th house of this chart was bang on at his ASC at the time of his death.
His Sun-Pluto conj, opposing his Moon in the 5th, tells me quite a bit about his manipulation about his children and the way he did, all those transactions.
I don’t know, have a look!!
Cristina,
Thanks for the comment. For the next week I am posting a ten-part blog comparing the Pisces and Gemini rising charts, looking at transits for almost every year of MJ’s life. In the last chapter, I will reveal which chart I think is correct, and why I think so. Now, I am taking Katherine Jackson at her word that Michael was born at night, although, of course, a woman who has nine children might not necessarily remember things accurately. That being said, I would never come to any conclusion about a given individual’s time of birth on the basis of anything other than a detailed examination of transits during that person’s life chronology. Determining a rising sign on the basis of one isolated personal trait is, forgive me, far too superficial a treatment of the matter. Astrology just isn’t as simple as that. But hey, without proof, all we have are opinions.

Nick, this is an engrossing article and one of the best I’ve seen on Michael! Thanks much!
Michael’s chart always had a tragic feeling for me… Most of the charts cast give a morning birth time, yet something about these always seemed a little off.
I kept playing with the morning times until I was able to get a good “feel” for what I think best represents his houses, setting his birth time at 9:33 am.
This gave him a Libra rising, which felt more true to his personality, aesthetics and shyness. (Gemini intercepts the 8th House of sexuality…) It put Scorpio in the second house, for those themes of money, personal resources and trust issues with family and managers.
His sense of humor was often misunderstood (Sag in the 3rd House). This time also places Chiron in Aquarius in the 4th House, right on the cusp of the 5th – his personal pain; his issues with plastic surgery and “otherness”. And it places his Moon in the 5th House of Children and fun, which is where he went to get his emotional needs met. Finally, with Cancer at the top of the 10th House – his funny “moonwalk” would epitomize his fame… Followed with Leo in the 10th and 11 Houses, to show some of the themes of being an outstanding performer, elevated by a famous family.
Humanity has so much to learn from the life of Michael Jackson. As Liza Minnelli said on the day he passed away, all hell was going to break loose. Michael’s existence was rife with controversy and isolation… (He never left home until he was 30 and was very enmeshed with his mother as well as the problems from his father. That restriction could show with Capricorn intercepting the 4th House… It could also represent his resistance to touring during the last years of his life.) Not to mention the lawsuits, sperm and egg donations to create babies… Was Michael his own worst enemy? I don’t think so. I just don’t see where he was taught to take personal responsibility for anything other than “performing”. That was a heavy-duty karmic assignment…! One I think he was unable to complete in his last incarnation. (I always believed he was the reincarnation of King Tut. There are some interesting contrasts there!)
I highly recommend J. Randy Tarabourelli’s book on Michael as a way of coming to one’s own personal insights. However I also think it would be useful to get an accurate read on a birth chart for Michael. It certainly does not hurt to discuss what we see, especially if there are tools here that could have helped him, then there’s something to learn.
I hope this helps! Thanks for allowing me to share!
Orandon, thanks for your comment. I actually have read Taraborrelli’s biography, two different editions, in fact. He just published an updated version, although some text from earlier editions was cut out for room, so I also use an older copy from my local library.
As for the question of his birth time, you might check out the series I’m in the midst of posting now, contrasting two of the evening birth times. This is an in-depth transits study, the product of over a month of solid work.
I am simply not comfortable with the idea of deciding on such matters simply on the basis of “feel”. Astrology requires work, like everything else in life. If you remain convinced of a morning birth time (always a possibility, even though his mother is on record saying he was born at night), you might try testing your hypothesis against the transits for all the events I list in the series.
Michael Jackson Dies: A Jupiter-Neptune Life » The Celebrity Astrology Blog…
Michael Jackson was born and died during Jupiter-Neptune conjunctions, and he lived through three others. This articles illustrates the periods in his life that coincided with the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction cycle….
Thanks Nick for all your effort, too bad about the birth certificate, maybe one day it will be requested by a family member. My rising sign so paints me, only MJ can validate his. I still think air. This site has been great, thankyou *&*. I’d like to say Happy Birthday to Michael Joe Jackson, still waiting for that final resting place, the mausoleum? Thanks for your music, I do like to sing your songs, and in honour of what you gave, my family and I will endeavour to heed your message of taking care of OUR children; by caring for the planet and ensuring children are not denied their childhood…*At least MJ has been spared the burden of dealing with the effects of Climate Change, which I have to say is ocurring at an alarming pace, God save us the human race. Oh nice to see, your media being a little more thoughtful with their coverage and comments, maybe they are learning… Time to make a difference

A star was born… Hope he rested at Encino!
Oh, that was ! must be only 16 hours in front of you over there!
Orandon:
I had not thought about MJ being the reincarnation of King Tut, but I will investigate further. I have visited Egypt, and I will admit that MJ did remind me of an ancient Egyptian due to the fact that his body was long, lean, and his hands and fingers were unusually long, notwithstanding his facial features before and after the surgeries. There was certainly something gracefully/royally unique — like a flash of lightening about him.
Thank you for your insight.
As an avid watcher of MJ over the last 5 years, and a member of fan discussion boards, I am very impressed with the accuracy of details you have compiled about his life.
I can’t fathom how, when his mother says he was born “later that night” people still want to rectify him as being born anytime in the early day but mine is not to question why.
I do have a very odd question though. There are many contradictions concerning the details of his “death” which have me seriously wondering whether he may not have “faked” it in order to begin a new existence without the problems this new contractual agreement, and so many financial binds he may have found himself in after his loan was refinanced on Neverland. I am no astrologer and if fact quite ignorant of how to read charts, but I read in one astro report that Pisces, Neptune and deception are ingredients in his chart. One thing as a fan I have been aware of over recent years was that Jackson wanted to get off the stage and work behind the scenes and I do not believe it would have been a terrible sacrifice for him to need to “fake” his death in order to get from underneath the control of those who had basically “financed” his life in recent years. I wonder if “faking” his death so that he could be free to write (obviously under an unknown name) could explain a new cycle of your Jupiter-Neptune theory. It sure would explain so many inconsistencies in accounts of what occurred. There are too many to list but I’ll give one example using that ambulance photo you have posted above. There were NO police at the scene when EMTs answered the call to this very famous Hollywood star’s address nor did any LA police arrive at any time by the time the ambulance left. Another is the fact that the 911 operator said to the caller, “call us back if you need anything else, then HUNG UP THE PHONE BEFORE HELP ARRIVED, when there was a man NOT BREATHING (dying!) seeking help on the other end of the phone, and I’ll offer one last one … the ambulance photo would have had to have been shot through a black tinted window after MJ was loaded into the ambulance, when a fan who had been staked out in front of his house the whole time (as fans typically are) told me that no one was allowed into the gate at all although there was paparrazzi outside the gate. With that said, there is continuous footage on youtube of the ambulance backing out of the gate (slowly and with no sirens even when leaving the scene) and there is no photog in sight taking pictures such as the famous one posted above and that, incidently is the only picture circulating the globe as “proof” of his demise. Any comment on deception/new incognito beginnings?
Al,
I don’t speculate about things I don’t know enough about, but let me put it this way. With all due respect to Michael and his family, falsehoods and manufactured scenarios have often been spread, from the early lies about his age, to the later nonsense like the oxygen tank. Jupiter-Neptune, among other things, can certainly be associated with “big lies”, and if anyone was capable and willing to fake their death, MJ qualifies. It is fairly certain that he faked illnesses in the past to avoid doing things he didn’t want to. That being said, there would have to be a lot of people complicit to make such a scam work, and I just find it a little far fetched that that many people would keep quiet and play along, no matter how much they were paid. Hey, I hope it’s true, it would be nice to think he could get a little peace in life before leaving.
Thanks for your comment. Hope you’re enjoying the current MJ series I’m doing, part six will be posted soon!
oops I meant to cite the possible reasons for it as being financial obligations to pay back Neverland loan combined with financial obligations to the company that paid any (presumed) advances in concert deal and which was looking to make major profits, combined with reports that he did not understand the deal as his manager Frank Dileo reported that he had to have 3 different lawyers explain it to Michael, combined with the fact that the menacing presence who called himself Tohme Tohme, who assumed authority over Michael’s financial life was someone Michael actually feared according to his spiritual advisor who played the tape of his complaining in the latter part of ‘08 and who did not go away after he was fired by Frank Dileo whom Michael re-hired to help him in recent months, and as verified by Tohme’s presence at the hospital doing a press conference as spokes person concerning Michael’s death, plus the fact that he reportedly was originally was excited about doing 10 concerts which sold out so fast that it became 31 and was stipulated in the contract and which turned into another 19 totalling 50 which neither Michael nor the promoters were sure he could pull off according to some fans who had been following him around (whom he recognized, talked to and knew for years) and who had allegedly been speaking with MJ on an informal basis just 2 short weeks prior to his reported demise as well as reported comments by Randy Phillips of the promotion company which is a conflicting report by the same man that MJ was in great shape.
ah thanks for your comment, it came faster than I expected. I’ll keep reading and thanks again for your prompt response!
I have just finished The Magic, The Madness, The Whole Story…A good read, certainly has grounded me and put things in perspective; I am thoroughly relieved to know he had an intimate relationship with someone; Lisa Marie Presley sounded good for him. As for Debbie Rowe, she sounds pretty decent, what a woman! Thanks again for this site as an outlet. Thanks to all you dedicated astrologers, and to you Nick, for bringing all your findings/knowledge to us mere mortals…
I am surprised that Donna says that Lisa Marie Presley sounded good for MJ. Obviously to understand I will need to read The Magic, The Madness….. et al! However, during an interview Lisa says that she didn’t know why she married him and laughed!! and in my opinion put him down – some friend. Debbie Rowe though has been decent and thankfully she is the mother of his first two children. However, I digress. Fact is (I know something about astrology but certainly not a Master) Michael as you know left home at 29 years of age – I left at 36 and no, I am not ugly, been told I am stunning but I don’t trust and I was naive. I believe MJ was naive but his situation was worse than mine in many respects. Does anyone recall an interview he had when he was approx. 25 (don’t recall the reporter) but he almost choked when questioned about still living at home. I believe this was manipulation by the reporter. He knew, he was streetwise but MJ wasn’t. While MJ was surrounded by his family he was safe but away from his family? – there lies another story. MJ knew nothing about everday life – the push the shove aspects – he lived life as if he was royalty and did not know much about commoners. He was intelligent and wanted to know about ‘normal’ people – he had an innate sense of curiosity. The very fact that he did not lead the sort of life you and I lead, made him different. That aside, I ask everyone to remember that there were many jealous of him – I am not going to state the names as I recall them – but I think they were jealous because they saw him as a) successful b) black (why should he have it so good) c) the lifestyle he led and the fame that he had. These ‘reptiles’ wanted to control his life and when he wouldn’t be controlled they went for him. I don’t believe that he was a) bisexual b) a paeodophile c) homosexual – none of it adds up. When he left home he was at the mercy of lots of creeps – evil people. Finally, I say this, many have judged him and I cannot wait for his detractors to be finally judged. MJ was a good and kind man. I am writing this from France and I have known good white men, bad white men and good white men. MJ was a good BLACK man and he had pride. May God rest his soul if he is there!!
Kate , I agree with your summation, in the fact Michael Jackson was a GOOD person. I went into overdrive into regarding his life, cause as i have stated before, I grew up hearing/seeing; ABC,I Want You Back, Ben, in the 70s, And wowing at The Moonwalk, and the Thriller era, yet I lost touch over the years, and I seriously didn’t know about him; the jordan Chandler stuff, his vegetarianism, his saving of ‘Bubbles’ from a cancer research set-up, his generosity and devotion to a better life for children of the world. Yes I do remember We are the World, but thought it was grab for outdoing Britains’ Bandaid recognition. But right from the start he was always banging on about children and rightly so. I remember a brief appearance him being escorted by police officers, with the overvoice saying he was being taken into custody for child sexual abuse allegations, and saying “I hope not”, and that was it, Antenna must have broke down, and seeing an excerpt from the Martin Bashir Doco, bits and pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. BUT funnily enough, I happen to go to a Go-Lo shop on a Friday afternoon, on the 5th, my brothers’ birthday and World Environment Day, on the counter was The Essential Michael Jackson for $10…what the hell, treat myself, I think last album was Eminems’, The Eminem Show, (I can relate to him I thought better), Anyway played a few knowns, until ‘Leave Me Alone’had that on repeat. 25th June, I ‘celebrated’, my 48th, next morning the 9:30 news announced his death, (when was his exact passing, I speculate around 8am). Then I played more from the album, Earth Song, In the Closet, Who is It, even Dirty Diana, Why didn’t I hear this before now…And as mentioned, reading all this has been over whelmingly sad. He should have been believed. I had my child by accident, yet it is the best thing one could ever have is the chance to become a parent, I feel now, oh my son loves his music and moves…I can’t stand ignorance, yet i have felt the need to defend him in death. As for relationships, prince meets princess; the fairytale, why not. For him, Lisa Marie looked physically and mentally, right, maybe not emotionally. Like you said, the media can misconstrue, and or we say things we regret…She probably didn’t knowwhy she married, on a whim, but I ‘feel’ there was something there, and she’s not nasty…Biographies are second hand information, things get lost in translation.Ihave been more interested in stuff said/done over thehandling of his death…I miss him, his contribution, but feel he pre destined,so we could question, as said, hope his children will grow up strong, and that Michael Jackson will be remembered and honoured for his GOODNESS. I do hope the fans enjoyed the doco film; This Is It, they deserve it…Please on a personal note, it is reaching 29Cm summer is another month away, if your serious about our home/garden, our beautiful planet earth, stop eating meat, it is an easy first step to take…thankyou, God Bless
