Mercury Retrograde Returns, And So Does American Idol

Posted by Patrick Watson on January 10, 2009 at 12:05 amNo Comments Yet

Mercury, the planet of contests, is slowing down to its retrograde station on January 11th, 2009. The 8th season of American Idol premieres on Fox on January 13th, 2009. As always with Mercury, there are a few new developments, the most notable being the permanent inclusion of a new fourth judge, Kara Dioguardi,  and her explicit role is to do what Mercury can do best: shake things up a little.

American Idol has a long history with Mercury retrogrades going right back to the first broadcast. Season 1 started on June 11th, 2002, 3 days after Mercury stationed direct in Gemini. Some of the most memorable moments from American Idol have coincided with the important phases of the Mercury cycle ever since, and this will be another.

The “dawg”/”beautiful”/”dreadful” commentary dynamic of Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell respectively, Kara DioGuardihas just grown a little stale after seven seasons. Kara herself was born shortly before Mercury stationed retrograde[1] and so she literally embodies what the upcoming Mercury retrograde period will be about for American Idol.

She has a resume like Randy Jackson’s, is a performer like Paula Abdul, and apparently, has opinions closer to those of Simon Cowell. She’s indicated that she’ll help Paula Abdul against the guys, but even without birthtimes, some curious general patterns in her synastry with the other judges might clue us in to future storylines between the judges.

The closest aspect she has with Randy Jackson[2] is her Mars in Scorpio is square his Uranus in Leo. Mars is aggression, confrontation, and Uranus, a little like Mercury, is the planet of surprises and sudden outbursts. Things may appear nice between them but we might expect some unexpected confrontations between these two. They ultimately seem respectful of each other’s views, since both have their Sun generally opposite the other’s Mercury. Nothing eye-popping here, although still, we are working without birthtimes so even a lot of this kind of analysis can be somewhat questionable.

Kara’s closest aspect with Simon Cowell[3] is his Sun is conjunct her Uranus in Libra. This is similar to the aspect she has with Randy, except it seems less antagonistic because it involves the Sun and not Mars. She may find him very impressive and striking. Also notice the not-so-subtle Venus-Neptune contacts. His Neptune conjunct her Venus, and his Venus square her Neptune. They may fantasize about each other a bit, maybe even flirt a bit! Kind of interesting that her tightest aspects with the two male judges involve Uranus.

I saved her synastry with Paula Abdul[4] for last because of how interesting it is. Like Kara, Paula was born close to a Mercury retrograde, 1 day after Mercury stationed direct. In red you can see that Paula’s Neptune is conjunct Kara’s Venus even more tightly than Simon’s! But it is also squared by Saturn, in red. In purple, you can see Paula’s Jupiter is also trine Kara’s Venus. And then weirdest of all, Paula’s Mars is conjunct Kara’s Saturn. Whew! The first thing that comes to my mind is a sort of love-hate relationship. It may be that while she appears to really like Kara, her brilliance might also cause Paula to be insecure or jealous. Depending on the day, they’ll be best of friends, or quite hostile, given the Mars-Saturn conjunction. Catfight! Maybe Paula liked being the only female judge. Her cougar reign could be threatened by the presence of a young tigress. Did I really just write that? Anyway, we’ll see.

If I had to guess, it looks more like that Kara would be teaming up with Simon against Randy and Paula, rather than the men versus the women. But we’ll have to see, and the only way we can do that is if we can watch the show! And you might as well, Mercury retrograde can bring about a lot of interesting folks, some even downright bizarre. As soon as we start finding out who is making it into the next rounds, you have to try and contact them before they become too famous to have time for you, and get their birth times! If we could do that, then we could have a lot more fun speculating about who the next American Idol will be!
