The Astrology of Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s Divorce
In case you haven’t heard already, Madonna and Guy Ritchie are splitting up, after nearly 8 years. The official divorce proceedings start today. Now might be a good time to review their relationship.
Madonna and Guy Ritche met at a party hosted by Sting in the summer of 1999. Unfortunately an exact date for this event is not known, although some very important longer-range transits are happening to both.
Madonna was born when Venus in Leo was square Neptune in Scorpio. This would be someone who would definitely glamorize all things to do with Venus, love, beauty, and the arts. That summer, Venus went retrograde in the sign of Leo, while Neptune, a planet with a 165-year cycle, opposed her Venus the only time in her life, in a sense activating the natal potential of her Venus-Neptune square. Guy it appears, lived up to her highest ideals of what she wanted in a partner. But as always with Neptune, it wasn’t destined to be happily ever after.
Because we know that their first child Rocco was born on August 11th, 2000, they must have already been together in November of 1999. It was between the summer and this time that Saturn and Uranus completed a series of squares to each other. For Madonna, this was quite special because she was also at her Uranus half-return, so that Uranus was in the opposite place from where it was at her birth, and Saturn was in a square to both her natal Uranus and transiting Uranus. The focus appears to be on her Uranus, and indeed there was a lot of intrigue about the relationship at the time because of their age difference. Unlike Madonna, it is not immediately apparent how these transits were important for Guy without a birth time,
Even their first son Rocco is astrologically and literally a child of the Saturn-Uranus forces at work between Madonna and Guy, because Rocco was born when Uranus was brightest in the sky, in opposition to the Sun, and one day after Saturn ingressed into Gemini.
Why are Saturn and Uranus important?
Because everyone and their mother in astrology has been going on about the recent Saturn-Uranus opposition. This time, Saturn and Uranus were both square Madonna’s natal Saturn, and with the emphasis being on Saturn, the relationship ended. And this time it is easy to see how the opposition affected Guy, it happened across the poor guy’s Sun.
So basically they got together at the Saturn-Uranus square, and they separated around the Saturn-Uranus opposition. (And in case you were interested, she got married to Sean Penn when Saturn and Uranus were conjunct at the end of the 80’s.) It’s interesting to think about, which one was Saturn and which one was Uranus, or both? Was Madonna Saturn for being the older woman while Guy was Uranus the young stud? Or was Guy Saturn for wanting a more normal family life while Madonna was Uranus, wanting to carry on the unsustainable life of a celebrity?
What went wrong? Enter Neptune.
Guy Ritchie was born when Mars in Leo was square Neptune in Scorpio. Guy Ritchie is fascinated by all things to do with violence, manliness, toughness, just as Madonna has a fascination for the opposite things with her Venus-Neptune square. Guy’s focus on and glamorization of violence and masculinity can be seen in his hyper-macho heist/caper/gangster movies like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. However, it can also indicate insecurities about masculinity, which seems to be supported by the observations of Madonna’s brother.
Just as when Neptune activated Madonna’s Venus-Neptune square when it opposed her Venus led her to meeting Richie, it appears when Neptune activated Guy’s Mars-Neptune square in exactly the same way it led to their separation. And since Madonna’s Sun is conjunct Guy’s Mars, Neptune is also opposing Madonna’s Sun. So what has been happening over the past year and now?
Madonna has probably been less than honest (as is the case with Neptune) with Guy. This summer Madonna was spotted hanging around with baseball player Alex Rodriguez, which coming amid reports that their marriage was in trouble does little to provide evidence that Madonna and Alex were only friends. Guy’s insecurities as a man are probably in full swing.
So what’s coming up for the two? The divorce will be finalized on January 2nd, 2009, and as the Saturn-Uranus opposition series plays out, maybe we’ll see Madonna play house with the baseball player. But perhaps someone should tell her about the next Saturn-Uranus square in 2015.
